This year’s annual meeting of the National Academy of Medicine will be virtual and open to the public for the first time.

Monday, October 19th is the symposium on Confronting Urgent Threats to Human Health & Society: COVID-19 and Climate Change.  We will open with a keynote address by Bill Gates, co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.  The address titled “Crises, Fast and Slow,” will reflect on COVID-19, climate change, and the imperative for global collaboration.  The first session will explore the state of the COVID-19 pandemic, including virus emergence, the impact of the pandemic, and US and global preparedness and response.  The second session will explore the environmental, societal, and individual impacts of climate change on human health.  The meeting will also include the President’s Forum, which will address the role of science and policymaking in responding to global crises.  We anticipate lively discussion among the speakers and with the attendees.
