Everybody wants to see improvements in meeting the mental health needs of our children: a new training program for pediatric clinicians is designed to do just that!  Communication Skills for Child Health Care Professionals will be held Saturday, November 7, 2015.

Two leading nonprofits are collaborating to create a new, evidence-based communication skills training conference to help pediatric clinicians work more effectively with families with child behavioral health issues.  Pediatric providers are ideally poised to help families, yet many do not feel confidence in their skills for engaging patients and families around mental health issues.  The research literature is clear: specific, validated communication skills improve parents’ willingness to trust and share concerns with their children’s clinicians. Even brief training is helpful, and clinicians are hungry for efficient ways to augment their skill set.

My work has made me well aware of the significant need for primary care clinicians to enhance their skills and confidence in managing children’s mental health issues. — David L. Kaye, MD, Professor of Psychiatry and Vice Chair of Academic Affairs Psychiatry, University at Buffalo.

The focus of this training conference is hands-on acquisition of communication skills to better engage patients and their families. It is ideal for all clinicians who treat children and teens, including pediatric primary care practitioners and mental health professionals.

The conference is hosted by the University at Buffalo, funded by a grant from the Peter and Elizabeth C. Tower Foundation, Getzville, NY and developed by collaborators The REACH Institute, New York, NY and the Institute for Healthcare Communication (IHC), New Haven, CT.

Attendees will have a unique opportunity to contribute to the development of an innovative new training program.
Space is limited. Pediatric clinicians in the Foundation’s catchment area will be given preference for participation (Erie and Niagara Counties, NY and Barnstable, Dukes, Essex, and Nantucket Counties, MA).
